Recycling Your Old Doors

If you like the rustic look of worn furniture, a very cheap way of achieving this is by acquiring some old doors. You may already have some yourself or know someone who does; you could even try the local skip, just keep your eyes peeled for anyone that may be willing to sell or give you their old doors for free. Doors can be recycled in to all kinds of furniture pieces cheaply and easily.

When looking for old doors, if you are going for a worn look, a bit of wear and tear will probably be a good thing however, you need to check the quality of the wood if you are going to be making it into a functional item of furniture as you don't want it to rot or break.

There are many possible ideas out there for how you can use an old door, you could make a table, a cupboard, a headboard, a chair or even reuse an old exterior door as an interior sliding door to add that extra bit of character to your home. The Most Famous Door in the World?

Number 10 Downing Street has been the home to many a British Prime Minister, it's front door is probably the most iconic door in the World, attracting millions of tourists each year. In 1991, after an IRA attack, the wooden door of Number 10 was replaced with an identical version made from bomb-proof metal. The door was originally made from black oak but was deemed to be unfit to withstand any future attacks so a high-security replica was fitted.  The original door now stands in the Churchill Museum where it is polished every couple of weeks by a Number 10 official cleaner, so that even the old door keeps shining.  

The new metal door, which is in keeping with the old Georgian style of the building, is painted using a high quality gloss which is what gives it it's remarkable shine. Whenever the door needs a re-gloss, it is removed and a replacement replica door is installed whilst maintenance is carried out; this takes several workmen to lift the weight of the high-security door.
